Light for Pathogen Reduction: UV Lighting in the Modern Age
This presentation will discuss the use of Germicidal UV & non-UV lighting technologies that may be deployed in lighting systems to reduce pathogens in public spaces. Various technological solutions will be explored – reviewing their history of use, discussing how they work and their effectiveness for typical commercial applications that we see today. Additionally, design considerations and techniques will be discussed in depth for applying GUV light disinfection technology safely and effectively, incorporating luminaire concepts to supplement the delivery of general ambient illumination. The presentation will also highlight most recent advances in GUV technology that offer more targeted capabilities for today’s specific pathogen reduction needs.
- Recognize the ability and effectiveness of ultraviolet light to reduce pathogens on surfaces and in air and water.
- Describe how pathogen reduction with a UV light source is calculated differently than illumination with a visible light source..
- Distinguish various ultraviolet wavelengths for use in occupied or unoccupied spaces and discuss how these technologies may be deployed for the least design-disruptive and most cost-effective manner.
- Identify the potential impacts of misapplied ultraviolet lighting.

About the Speaker:
Jeannine Fisher Wang, PE LC
Jeannine’s 30+ year career has emphasized lighting technology, application, and design in a comprehensive combination of product design & engineering, marketing, communications, market transformation, and leadership roles. She currently holds the position of Director Technology Solutions for Acuity Brands and is based in Oakland, California, where Jeannine has a leading role in accelerating market adoption of cutting-edge design platforms such as OLED Lighting, Circadian and Dynamic Lighting, and UV Light Disinfection Technology.
Prior to joining Acuity, Jeannine held Marketing Director and Senior Illumination Engineer positions at two leading luminaire manufacturers that specialize in visually comfortable architectural lighting. Her work has led to the development of seminal LED and OLED solid state lighting recognized by the IES Progress Committee, the Next Generation Luminaires Design Competition, and the prestigious Lightfair International Most Innovative Product of the Year Award.
Formerly, Ms. Wang served as Senior Program Engineer at Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), where she managed the lighting energy efficiency educational programs at the Pacific Energy Center (PEC) in San Francisco. There, she focused on analyzing and promoting emerging lighting technologies as well as helping the California Energy Commission and California Public Utility Commission set policies that have encouraged the responsible use of lighting energy.
Jeannine also held positions in a variety of lighting design and electrical engineering firms and has received several awards for her design work in lighting, including the International Illumination Design Award Special Citation. She holds eleven US patents.
Ms. Wang earned her Bachelor of Architectural Engineering from Penn State University in 1987 and a Masters of Business Administration from Dominican University of California in 2002. She is a Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in California, electrical discipline, and Lighting Certified (LC) by the National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Profession (NCQLP).
