Switching from HPS to LED saves up to 50% in energy, with a ROI less than one year.  However, it’s not as simple as swapping lights one for one.  Several variables play a role into the viability of a crop.  Nutrients, temperature, water and light interact with each other.  When we change one, such as going from HPS to LED, other variable must change too.  We will discuss what this interaction is and what needs to be considered when using LED over HPS.

Additionally, visual lighting metrics such as lux and lumens do not matter when it comes to plant lighting.  We will discuss what metrics are important and what good performance metrics look like.

About the Speaker:

Robert Soler – Robert is the VP of Human Research and Technology at BIOS Lighting.  Prior to his dedicated role in human circadian rhythms, he worked with plant physiologist at NASA’s Space Life Sciences Lab.  Additionally he developed a novel LED grow system for the South Pole McMurdo Sound “Freshies” vegetable production facility.
